BOSTON – Junior Vince D’Alto set a single-game program record with 14 points and junior Conor Calderone matched a single-game NCAA record with 32 faceoff wins as the No. 13/12 Boston University men’s lacrosse team defeated Lafayette, 21-11, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League with the win. This is the best-ever start to Patriot League play for the Terriers.

D’Alto not only smashed Chris Gray’s single-game record of 10 points, but he also became the seventh Terrier in program history to collect 100 career points. The Northport, New York, native now has 111 points thanks to 64 goals and 47 assists. The seven goals and seven assists are also career highs for D’Alto, who only had one turnover during his record performance.

Calderone was tremendous at the faceoff X for BU. He matched a single-game NCAA record with 32 faceoff wins as part of an incredible 32-of-34 day at the X. Calderone also gathered a program-record 21 ground balls. The NCAA record was originally set by Hobart’s Matthew Pedicine, who went 32-of-37 against Siena on Feb. 16, 2019.

The 21 goals eclipsed the Terriers’ single-game mark of 18, which they most recently set earlier this season at Colgate. Eight different Terriers in total scored a goal on Saturday.

Senior Timmy Ley extended his goal scoring streak to 30 games with four goals and two assists for six points while junior Louis Perfetto (3g, 2a) and senior Jake Cates (2g, 3a) each completed five-point afternoons. Sophomore Tommy Bourque tallied two goals and one assist for three points while senior Jett Dziama had a multi-point day as well with a goal and an assist in addition to five ground balls.

Sophomore Reilly Sullivan secured his first collegiate goal while senior Nik McFarland notched his first goal of the season. Junior Roy Meyer matched a career high with six ground balls and also led BU with three caused turnovers in addition to his assist on the McFarland strike. Freshman Jimmy O’Connell also got on the score sheet with his second career assist.

BU gathered 51 ground balls as a team, led by Calderone’s 21. Senior Blake Phillips and junior Patrick Morrison each had two ground balls and two caused turnovers while sophomore Dane DeGoler forced a pair of giveaways and also made a great kick save as the Leopards tried to beat the 10-man ride.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Garber was once again sharp, making 12 saves and allowing just 10 goals. Freshman Will Barnes played the final 7:41 of the game and made a career-high three stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU scored just 14 seconds into the contest. Calderone won the opening draw back to Meyer, who then lobbed a pass over the midfield line to Dziama. The senior raced into the box and dished the ball to D’Alto for the finish.
  • Lafayette evened the score at 1-1 just over a minute later, but that was the last time the game was tied, as just 1:08 later, D’Alto connected with Bourque for a goal.
  • D’Alto made it 3-1 with 10:27 to go in the opening quarter before Kalman Graham cut the deficit to 3-2 at 8:33.
  • It took just 19 seconds for Ley to respond and push the lead back to 4-2.
  • That goal began a 6-0 run for BU that Ley capped just 57 seconds into the second quarter.
  • The teams traded goals to make it a 10-4 game before D’Alto and McFarland ended the half with tow more strikes to create a 12-4 halftime score.
  • McFarland’s goal came in transition after Meyer knocked down a pass, collected the ground ball and raced into the Lafayette box before finding McFarland for the step-down finish.
  • D’Alto, Dziama and Perfetto all found the back of the net to stretch the lead to 15-4 with 10:46 left in the third quarter.
  • Lafayette scored six of the next seven goals to cut the deficit to 16-10 with 13:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • BU answered that by scoring five of the last six goals of the game, with Sullivan’s first collegiate strike creating the final score with 1:53 to play.

GAME NOTES

  • Perfetto and D’Alto extended their point streaks to 25 games and 23 games, respectively, and have yet to be held without a point in their Terrier careers.
  • D’Alto leads BU in goals (27), assists (21) and points (48) after today’s incredible effort in which he matched Ley’s single-game mark of seven goals in a game.
  • All three of those marks represents a new career high for D’Alto.
  • Nine of D’Alto’s 14 points came in the first half.
  • Eighteen of the Terriers’ 21 goals were assisted and all of the goals were scored at even strength, as BU did not earn an EMO on Saturday.
  • Calderone, who shattered his previous single-game mark of nine ground balls, now has 62 ground balls this season.
  • The previous program record for faceoff wins in a game was 26, set by Sam Talkow (’17) at Colgate on March 7, 2015.
  • Talkow also set the program record with 18 ground balls against the Raiders that day, a mark that Sean Christman (’21) also matched on March 23, 2019, against Lafayette.
  • Meyer is one caused turnover shy of matching the career high of 26 that he set last season.
  • The Terriers improved to 8-0 all-time against Lafayette.

UP NEXT

  • BU will continue its three-game homestand on Saturday, April 2, when the Terriers welcome Navy to Nickerson Field as part of Lax-A-Palooza.
  • Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m., with the women’s lacrosse team scheduled to face Lafayette later that day at 4 p.m.
