PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The 14th ranked University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team was on the precipice of history Saturday before the Spiders dropped an 11-10 overtime heartbreaker to third-seeded Penn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Penn Park. The loss snapped the Spiders five-game winning streak as they finished the year with an 11-5 overall record. The 11 wins are tied for the second-most wins in a season in program history.
Richmond was making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years since the program’s inception in 2014. The Spiders are one of only 16 programs in the nation that have been in four NCAA Tournaments since 2014. Saturday’s loss marks Richmond’s second-straight one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament as it fell to Duke in 2019.
The Spiders held a lead in the game with under a minute remaining before Penn scored the game-tying goal with 29 seconds left in regulation. The Quakers tallied the game-winning goal 1:17 in the extra period, ending the Spiders’ run in the NCAA Tournament.
Richmond took an early 2-0 lead on the Quakers as Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) tallied his first of three goals on the day and defensive midfielder Joe Gooley (Duxbury, Mass.) scored the first goal of his career. Penn (11-4) responded with five-straight goals, taking a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Spiders responded by scoring four out of the next five goals, tying the game at 6-6. Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) recorded his 40th goal of the season and raised his point scoring streak to 59-straight games. Sophomore Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) scored his 25th of the year before Young added two-straight for his ninth hat trick of the season.
Penn held a 7-6 lead at the break but the Spiders scored the first two goals of the second half for an 8-7 advantage. Long-stick midfielder Braden McClure (Towson, Md.) recorded the first goal of his career tying the game and senior Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) gave the Spiders the lead with his first of the game.
Penn scored two in a row before the Spiders rallied back for of pair of their own. Graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) pulled Richmond even with a man-up goal before Dunn gave the Spiders a 10-9 lead with 3:55 left with another man-up opportunity. The goal was the 25th of the season for Dunn, a career-best.
The Spiders defense came up big late in the game with a handful of stops and redshirt freshman goalie Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) made a save with 1:00 remining giving the Spiders the ball. Penn was able to force a turnover on the ride, setting the stage for the game-tying goal in the final minute.
Freshman faceoff specialist Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won the last regulation faceoff, giving the Spiders the final possession of the second half. Penn was able to block a Lanchbury shot in the closing seconds and corral the loose ball as time expired. The Quakers won the faceoff in overtime and scored on their first possession as Ben Smith tallied the winning goal just 1:17 into the extra frame.
Lanchbury finished the game with a goal and two assists, raising his season total to a program-record 81 points. He finished the year with 40 goals and 41 assists, with the 40 goals ranking second all-time in single season and the 41 assists marking a new program record. He finishes his illustrious Spider career holding the records for career goals (162), assists (132) and points 293.
