Hundreds of girls, their running buddies, families and coaches participated in the Girls on the Run of Southeastern Connecticut’s end of season celebratory 5K on Saturday, May 14 at Stonington Human Services.
Located at one site nine years ago, GOTR SECT has grown to hosting 14 sites this season — spanning from Putnam to Stonington to Middletown and Colchester, with the majority of sites in Groton, New London and Norwich. From February to May, 200 girls in grades 3-8 have been meeting twice a week learning transformative life skills such as teamwork, goal-setting and self-empowerment, while training to complete the end of season 5K together.
According to a release, Girls on the Run of Southeastern Connecticut “envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.” Girls are inspired to be joyful, healthy and confident using a curriculum that integrates running.
According to one participant, “Girls on the Run is about much more than running. It is about being a good friend, standing up for what you believe in and working together to make a difference. It is also about setting a goal and achieving it. Girls on the Run changed my life.”
