UTICA — Thomas R. Proctor High School senior Cristhian Cuevas has been a standout on the school’s track and field team.

Cuevas participated in track and field in middle school before joining the school’s baseball team for freshman and sophomore seasons. After the COVID-19 pandemic happened, Cuevas made the decision to change course and return to participating in track and field.

While spring 2021 wasn’t a normal season – teams competed predominantly in dual meets and not in larger events – Cuevas advanced to sectionals in the 200-meter run and the 400-meter run. He was among top finishers during sectionals.

He’s hoping for a strong season as a senior. During the indoor season, he earned all-league and all-division honors n the 55 and 300 event. During the outdoor season, he’s participating in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs and is a member of two relay events. He also participates in the long jump event this spring.

This week, he’s turned in top times of 11.1 seconds in the 100 and 23.9 seconds in the 200.

In the long jump, he has a personal record of 19-feet, five inches, which is a mark he set during the indoor season. He hasn’t had a result that matches that yet during the outdoor season, he said.

Here are five questions he answered for the Daily Sentinel:

What are your primary personal goal and team goals for the season?

My primary goal as a team I would like to finish undefeated. “My primary team goal is to win sectionals in the 200 and the 4×100 relay and maybe the 400 as well.”

Is there an area of your track and field career you have improved the most?

It is in the 200-meter event, he said.

“I’ve gotten really better at running the curve off (on the track). Because last year when I was used to do it, I was always slow on the curve and I had to catch up to everybody on the straightaway. I got better at running the curve.”

Is there an event that you like participating in more? Why?

It is the 4×100 relay, he said. He’s been part of the relay with different members of the team this spring.

“Because it is super exciting seeing my team come around the curve. Especially if we’re second or third (place) and then I get the baton and have to catch everybody. I love doing that. It is like a team effort.”

What are your college plans academically and athletically?

“I’m undecided as of now. I do want to run track in college and also play football.”

He said he wants to major in business management. His preference is to go to an NCAA Division I school if an offer comes along but is also open to the Division III level.

What do you like to do for fun away from sports?

“I like hang to out with my friends and go out to eat. I like to walk my dog.”

His dog is a chihuahua named Gizmo.
