La Salle Continues Home Stretch with Three Conference Contests – La Salle University Athletics

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women’s water polo team wraps up its seven-game home stretch against MAAC opponents Wagner, Iona and Villanova this weekend.
 
The Explorers will welcome both Wagner and Iona to Kirk Pool on Saturday, Apr. 9 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, before taking on cross-town rival Villanova on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. All contests will be available to stream on YouTube.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:

  • La Salle enters the contest following a 2-2 weekend that saw record-breaking performances from freshman Francesca Co’.
  • Co’ led the Explorers in scoring in the victory over St. Francis Brooklyn with a team-high seven goals setting a new single-game program record in the category. She then dominated in defense from the field in the game against Marist tallying seven steals to set yet another single-game program record. The performance earned her this week’s MAAC Rookie of the Week honor.
  • The Explorers are currently averaging 13.3 goals per game while holding their opponents to 10.1. As a squad, La Salle is shooting at 47%.
  • Graduate student Kalista Hyham leads La Salle’s offensive effort with 104 points on 82 goals and 22 assists in 30 games. She has also drawn a team-high 65 exclusions this season.
  • 10 other Explorers have reached double-digit goals this season including six who have scored 30+. Madelyn Koerper is the second-leading goal-scorer on the team with 52 on the season.
  • Shanna Zuanich leads the assist-effort for the Explorers with 46 in 29 games. Her 85 puts this season make her the second-leading point earner on the squad.
  • Emma Gurasich has recorded over 780 minutes in the cage this season. She has made 219 saves in 30 games while adding 32 assists and 58 steals. The junior currently has a 46.7 save percentage.  

SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS:

  • Wagner enters the contest at 26-3 record overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference play. The Seahawks are currently on a nine-game win streak and is 6-0 when visiting their opponents home pool.
  • The Explorers and Seahawks last faced each other on Feb. 26 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Wagner took an early lead and held La Salle to just two goals in the second half to take the 14-5 victory.
  • Malia Josephson leads the Seahawks in points with 130 from 63 goals and 67 assists.
  • Andrea Arias is Wagner’s leading goal scorer with 79 goals in 29 games. She is currently shooting 57.7% this season.
  • Skye Nankervis leads the defensive effort from the field for the Seahawks with 52 steals this season.
  • Kristina Bell has recorded over 720 minutes in the net this season. He has made 170 saves while adding one assist and 12 steals. Bell currently holds a .530 save percentage.

SCOUTING THE GAELS:

  • The Gaels enter the contest at 14-11 overall and 5-5 in MAAC play. Iona is currently on a three-game skid, yet is 2-1 when visiting its opponent’s home pool.
  • Iona is 0-2 when facing the Explorers this season. The Gaels last played La Salle on Mar. 19 at a neutral location dropping the contest in a narrow 15-14 decision. The Explorers previously had defeated the Gaels by a margin of three, 14-11, back on Feb. 26.
  • Jordon Van Reeken is the leading goal scorer for the Gaels. She has totaled 69 goals and 29 assists for 98 points in 23 games this season. Van Reeken is currently shooting 42.9% and has drawn a team-high 36 exclusions. The utility is also the leading defender in the field with 38 steals.
  • Mary Jane Bailey has totaled nearly 500 minutes in the net this season. She has made 147 saves while adding four assists and 17 steals in 20 games.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:

  • The Wildcats enter the contest this weekend at 17-13 overall and 6-5 in the MAAC. Villanova recently lost to Marist, 13-12, in overtime last weekend. The loss snapped a two-game streak for the Wildcats. This will be the first meeting between La Salle and Villanova this season.
  • Kaysle Stuba leads the Wildcats offensive efforts this season with 87 goals, 47 assists and 134 points in 30 games. She has also drawn a team-high 55 exclusions this season.
  • Stella Byles and Amanda Rice lead the defensive efforts from the field for Villanova. Byles leads the Wildcats in steals with 39 while Rice leads in field blocks with 23.
  • Abigail Shelby has recorded 720 minutes in goal this season. She has made 174 saves and added seven assists and 23 steals in 28 games. She currently holds a 38.3 save percentage.
