Three Hat Tricks Help Secure 16-9 Win Against Lafayette – Villanova University – Villanova University Official Athletic Site

Easton, Pa. – The Villanova Wildcats finished their five-game road trip with a 16-9 win over Lafayette Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Villanova improves to 3-6 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 1-5.

A trio of hat tricks led the Villanova offense, as senior midfielder Caroline Curnal tied a career high with five goals, freshman attacker Sydney Pappas scored a career-high four and senior midfielder Alexa Tsahalis netted the final hat trick. Curnal bad broken her career high two weeks prior, after a five-goal performance against Saint Joseph’s (3/2). 

The Wildcats scored early and often, jumping out to a 5-0 lead with 4:51 left in the first period. Junior Addie Fischer got the scoring started, followed by two Curnal goals, with senior Caroline Phelps assisting on the second. Pappas would continue the early run with her first at the 6:21 mark, while senior Olivia Piccirilli would make the lead five.

Two goals by Lafayette late in the opening period made the score 5-2 heading into the second. The teams would trade goals early, as Tsahalis scored off a pass from junior Cara Moreau and Pappas netted her second. The Leopards would have an answer, scoring two before the break and another to open the third period, cutting the Villanova lead down to one at 7-6. Villanova would close the final 13:01 of the third period on a 7-0 run, with five different Wildcats scoring.

During the run, Curnal would score three times, while Tsahalis, Pappas, Moreau and freshman Sami Carey each netted goals of their own. Moreau would assist on two of Curnal’s goals, setting a career high with three to finish the game. Carey and sophomore Kayla Gulmi were also credited with assists during the run.

Lafayette would score the twice early in the fourth, however Pappas and Tsahalis each answered with goals. The Leopards would score with one second remaining to make the final score 16-9.

Curnal remained dominant in the draw circle, securing 12 draws in the contest. Entering the game, the senior averaged 8.57 draw controls per game, fifth best in the country. 

The Wildcats will host No. 10 Michigan on Sunday, their first home game in nearly a month. Streaming will be available on FloSports.

Notes: Six different Wildcats recorded caused turnovers against Lafayette…Caroline Curnal set the team high in points for a single game with six.
