Devonport’s Portside Barbell gym has changed locations and is inspiring gym goers with a mural of familiar faces. Beau Von Stieglitz, who owns the gym, explained why they moved from Oldaker Street to their new location on North Fenton Street. “We needed to expand and we have car parking here,” he said. “Now we have more room, we have more room for the classes. “Some people get intimidated by other people in the sport specific training so we have created an area overall that is better for everyone. IN OTHER NEWS “There is a bit of space to create a kids corner for parents to be able to bring their kids while they train. “I have a jungle gym, a little rock wall and a few other kid related activities. “That will develop over the coming months and hopefully that’s in by winter.” To help inspire customers, Mr Von Stieglitz has teamed up with artist Jonathon Falcke, who has created a eight metre wide by 3.5 metre high mural which features Australian weightlifter Tia Clair Toomey, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wonder Woman. “I’ve known Johnny since high school and Jonny’s been living in Melbourne doing design work and in the middle of COVID he got sick of it and came back and I had this space and had this idea anyway so it just went hand in hand really,” Mr Von Stieglitz. Mr Falcke said now he has a taste for this larger work, he wants to do more. “I’m traditionally an oil painter so this is definitely the biggest I’ve done,” he said. “Hopefully it is the first of some more. “I definitely want to reach out to (Devonport City) council and see if they have any more spaces around town.” Mr Falcke explained why the four motivational individuals were chosen. “We wanted a wall of inspirational figures,” he said. “We wanted it balanced with males and females because we didn’t want it to be overly masculine or anything and we are thinking of adding other inspirational figures to it eventually.” The gym is located at 62/64 North Fenton St, Devonport and is open 24/7 for members.
